Self-portrait in 3 different styles
This was a quick assignment we only had 1 week for. We had to pick 3 styles and draw ourselves in those styles.
Class Assignment
Before we started working on the 3 styles assignment, we did a quick sketching exercise with the class. We had 3x5 minutes to draw 3 reference pictures in 3 styles: a cartoon style, a big and bold style and a realistic style.
The first 2 went pretty well, but the realistic style was too difficult to do in only 5 minutes.
Choosing 3 Styles
The first style I definitely wanted to draw, was the Pokémon style. I have loved Pokémon since I was young and I really like the style of all the art.
I also chose the art style of the anime Demon Slayer, because when I watched that anime with my boyfriend, I remembered loving the art style so much, especially the unique lineart style. I’ve tried drawing myself in that style last year and never finished it, so I really wanted to try again.
Lastly, I chose the Winx Club style, because I used to love this series when I was younger. It’s such a recognisable art style, with the tall, skinny girls in short and sparkly outfits. I thought it’d be fun to try to draw myself in that style.
Lineart
The Pokémon style is very recognisable, the lineart is black and about the same thickness everywhere.
The Demon Slayer style is one of my favorite styles, especially because of the lineart. All lines are just 1 pixel wide, but the outer lines are made very thick and angular. All lineart is also just black.
The lineart of the Winx Club style is the only one out of these 3 styles where the lineart isn't black. Sometimes the colors of the lineart are made lighter instead of darker, to make it more visible when the color behind the lineart is too similar. The size of the lines are very playful and differ in size.
Base Colors
To make these characters look more like me, I chose the colors of the outfits to be yellow & black, since those are my favorite colors. Since the Pokéball in the first drawing had some red in it, I decided to draw a small hint of red in the other 2 drawings as well. My haircolor is of course a dark blonde and my eye color is a mix of blue and green.
The colors of the Pokémon style are colorful, but not too saturated. There are very obvious shadows with hard lines, and a few tiny highlight spots.
The colors of the Demon Slayer style are the most faded out of these 3 styles, shadows are once again very visible with hard lines. There aren't any highlights in this style.
The Winx Club style is also very recognisable, especially the facial features. The colors are very saturated and there are hardly any highlights.
Final Result
Evaluation & Feedback
It was understandable but sad that we only got 1 week to work on this project, since I had a lot of fun drawing in these familiar styles. I had such great ideas, wanting to draw full bodies, draw my favorite Pokémon next to my first character and draw a full on sparkly Winx fairy outfit for the last character, but I quickly realised I had no time for that, so I kept myself limited to just the bust with an arm. I am still pretty happy with the end result, especially the Demon Slayer drawing, that one is my favorite out of the 3.
My teacher gave me 2 G's for this assignment. "You chose fun and diverse styles. You use these styles well and in your own way. You know how to use certain poses and emotions. You also adjust the color palette well to all 3 designs."
